Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint each serve unique purposes and have distinct usages. Microsoft Word is a word processing software that allows you to write letters, essays, college papers, etc., or engage in free writing. Excel is a spreadsheet program that enables you to compile and analyze data to reflect information based on the input you provide. When you first enter the interface of these applications, you'll notice differences immediately. In Microsoft Word, you're presented with a blank document; in Excel, you're greeted with rows and columns ready for data entry. While you can insert tables into Word documents, this feature is not as central as in Excel, where data organization is essential. In Excel, you can compact large amounts of information into data and calculate using unique formulas.
